Definition Mutual support groups whose members are individuals who have difficulty dealing with the pressures of everyday life and are living with unresolved emotional issues such as depression, anger, broken or strained relationships, low self-esteem, fear, anxiety, resentment, jealousy, guilt, boredom, loneliness or other destructive feelings. The groups meet in-person, by telephone or via the Internet; provide a structured atmosphere in which participants can share their experience, strengths and hopes in a search for inner peace; and may include faith-based and secular 12-step groups as well as non-12 step groups.
